Light years ahead I just wanted to compliment you on such a great program. I have studied music in some form or another since I was 3. I’m a decent composer and I realized if I really wanted to take my skill to the next level I needed to be able to play and sight read piano much, much better. I had the rudimentary keyboard skills in University and even some private lessonsbut they always bored me to tears, so I just rushed through and it didn’t stick.

Why is it that all over the world, at least 95% of all piano students will tell you that their left hand is weaker than their right, both in piano technique and in musical note reading? The answer is that at least 95% of well-meaning and otherwise good piano teachers are doing their piano students a disservice by making a simple mistake: piano teachers habitually teach the right hand first.

You have two hands, so why would you habitually favor one hand over the other? Surely, logic says we should start new pieces with the left hand at least 50% of the time? And yet most piano teachers always start piano lessons with the right hand. If you ask them why, they don’t know. It’s just the way they’ve been taught. So, as simple as it sounds, my first free piano lessons tip is: Piano Lessons Tip 1: Start with the left hand at least 50% of the time Notice, I say at least 50% of the time. Apart from the need to reverse the collective consciousness among right-hand-biased piano teachers, there’s another very good reason we should go further and start piano lessons with the left hand not just 50% of the time, but almost all the time.

My second piano lessons tip is: Piano Lessons Tip 2: Don’t use mnemonics such as 'Every Good Boy Deserves Fruit' and 'Great Big Dogs Frighten Auntie' These mnemonics will actually slow your musical note reading, particularly with young children who are still getting used to the alphabet. Let’s say they’re reading the top treble note and they say to themselves “Every Good Boy Deserves Fruit”. They won’t instantly make the connection that Fruit means F in the same way an adult would. Rather than these mnemonics, say EGBDF as a tongue twister. How quickly can you say EGBDF? EGBDF gets you there much quicker.

And in the left hand, GBDFA is almost like Jibidy FA — GBDFA. Use this technique and your note reading will improve dramatically!

While this piano lessons tip is great for notes that are on the stave, how do you read notes that are, say, on the fourth ledger line above the treble stave?
