On April 8 2014, almost thirteen years after it was first released, Windows XP will finally breathe its last breath and die — officially, anyway. From that date, Microsoft will no longer support the inveterate OS, meaning instability bugs and security vulnerabilities will go forever unpatched.

Windows Embedded 2009 Posready Multiple Intelligences

With Windows XP’s desktop market share still around 30%, and many enterprises still months or years away from upgrading to Windows 7/8, these unsupported and insecure machines represent a serious risk to the health and security of the internet and other high-tech infrastructure. If just a single zero-day vulnerability is found after April 8, it will never be fixed. There’s no telling what damage cybercriminals might sow with such an exploit. It’s important to note that (end of life/end of support) has been a long time coming. We’ve known that Microsoft would withdraw paid assisted support, security updates, and non-security hotfixes for Windows XP on April 2014.

There will also be no further updates to online technical documentation. While this is obviously an issue from a security perspective, the larger issue is compliance — if you manage personal data (which is basically every big company), there are industry and federal regulations (PCI, Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, etc.) that you need to comply with. Using a non-supported operating system, and thus dangerously exposing your client database to hackers, is a compliance no-no. It’s hard to believe that 29% of PC users still see this when they turn their computer on.

According to Net Applications, Windows XP still had a 29% share of the desktop market at the end of December 2013. Realistically, most big western enterprises and institutions have probably already upgraded to Windows 7.

The bulk of the 29% probably consists of China’s infamous love affair for pirated copies of Windows XP, and a lot of mom-and-pop desktops and netbooks. Windows 7 only came out four years ago, and the widely reviled Windows Vista came before that. When you factor in the slowing pace of the PC market, and the small performance gains from new hardware, it’s not hard to believe that there’s a bunch of Windows XP machines still floating around.

(Read:.) The other area where Windows XP still rules supreme is in legacy systems. For large institutions, such as banks, upgrading from a legacy (and often bespoke) system is time consuming, expensive, and dangerous. As a result, there are banks, airline companies, and other huge enterprises that still have back-end systems that are much older than Windows XP.

Case in point: According to, 95% of the 420,000 ATMs (cash machines) in the USA run Windows XP. Come April 8 2014, if a serious security flaw is found in Windows XP, the banks will be on their own to defend against increasingly high-tech criminals.

(Read:.) The banks do have plans to upgrade these machines, but it will take time — probably a few years, if not more. It’s hard to get a fix on the total number of desktop PCs in the world, but it’s somewhere between one and two billion. At 29% of the desktop market share, a botnet of epic proportions could be fashioned if a suitable zero-day vulnerability was found. I guess we should be glad that Microsoft has an excellent reputation for, eh? Anyway, the point is, if you have a friend or family member who’s still running Windows XP, help them upgrade to Windows 7 as soon as possible. In case you were wondering, Office 2003 also has the same EOL/EOS date — but unless you’re in the habit of opening random email attachments, it’s much less of a potential security risk.

Of those used on an almost daily basis, older versions of Visual Studio, PADS (Now Mentor) schematic capture and PWB layout, the Keil 8051 IDE, and I think the Renesas 16/32 bit microcontroller IDE. Plus others whose drivers won’t install under 7. Also, unless I missed some exception mechanism hidden somewhere, I had to turn off UAC to avoid 7 having a hissy-fit every time I executed a piece of unrecognized software. Other toolsets acquired after 7 was introduced, eg. The Xilinx FPGA ISE, IAR ARM IDE and Atmel IDE obviously work fine.

I made an honest effort a year ago or so to switch to 7, but after several weeks of trying to adapt – ie. Switching in an out of the XP VM, waiting for the VM to come up and shut down, fixing a config file when the VM failed to come up, and rebooting between 7 and XP, I just started booting XP on every reset – And hoped there would be some last-minute reprieve this year. My PC that I’m now typiong this on, runs on XP (MCE 2005, to be exact) and is very fast. It’s stable and does the job. And no, I’m not some kind of light user. I’m using the PC or loads of heavy stuff, including audio-editing, video-editing, Adobe CS apps, virtual machines (I even run Windows 7 inside a VM!) and I have a near-high-end Nvidia graphics card that enables me to play even the latest games with the good graphics. 3.2GB RAM, 500GB HDD, it is my home, work, and multimedia system.

It runs extremely good and am very satisfied with it that I don’t even want to upgrade to a newer OS. There’s no need when everything works, and not just works but working brilliantly. Yes, it is fun. They never hang and they are very speedy. It’s highly satisfying. Remember that XP with that high RAM is much faster than the Windows 7 equivalent, mainly due to lower resources being used. 7 only becomes faster than XP when it goes over the 4GB mark, and that’s x64 only.

My games don’t require DirectX 11, also note that I mostly play pre-2011 games (though I got two 2013 ones). BTW, there’s a hack that allows DirectX 11 to run on XP.

I can’t be asked to test it as I haven’t got any games that require 11. Limited hardware support, no hardware GUI acceleration, lack of modern power saving features, doesn’t take advantage of modern hardware advancements, limited compatibility with modern software, doesn’t support new directx, etc etc. I don’t really want to go through all of the reasons that you shouldn’t use an out of date OS, there’s a wealth of information on the web.

Do your research please, before criticising my post. I don’t really want to spoon feed people information when they don’t understand my post or don’t know about the subject of the discussion. HACK ATM AND BECOME RICH TODAY!!!! Hello everyone. There is a new way of making cash, although it is illegal but also a smart and easy way of living big. I used to be a barrack girl until i became eager and decided to change my life one way or the other.

I got opportunity to register for the militant amnesty through connection thereby taking me out of the country for training in the United States for a period of 3years. To cut the story short, during my training i made some white friends who were geeks and also experts at ATM repairs, programming and execution who taught me various tips and tricks about breaking into an ATM. With my knowledge gained from my white geek friends, i have been able to counterfeit and programme a blank ATM card using various tools and software’s.

I have ready-made programmed ATM cards; I am just 29, my family are in USA and i have cash, i have a car, i live in malaysia and i travel all around the world. I do my things on a low-key to avoid suspicion. Some of you will wonder why i am selling this out if truly i am already living large. It is because it is hard task doing it yourself, i wont lie to you, its not easy to hack ATM talk more of to reprogramme the card alone and be able to get $40,000 each day. It takes days and sometimes weeks.

Some of you will want the ready made card to avoid the stress of doing it yourself and i don’t give the ready made card out for free because i spent days trying to make it available for you. For request of the ATM NOTE: the ATM card has no pin, no registered account number. It has no limit for withdrawal and it is untraceable. You can also his contact number on +1 512 717 0124 •. Windows is about as secure as you can go before going through the DYI Linux route. Embedded Linux’s issue is from its lack of “trust”. Think of it like our banks.

If our money wasn’t regulated by the Federal Reserve, nobody would trust it as a medium of exchange. Windows Embedded has Microsoft, a giant tech company that keeps IT world running, backing it up with a promise of long support. Linux doesn’t have a well-known business-focused company pushing forward its operating systems. (Enterprise Linux is relatively unknown, and Google is consumer-based) Creating an entire department dedicated to maintaining an embedded operating system is a lot harder than it sounds, and even then, you would probably save time and money going with Microsoft’s route.

It became part of the NASDAQ-100 in Dec. A year later, it started trading on the NYSE. In July 2009, Red Hat replaced CIT on Standard and Poor’s 500 stock index.

And in 2012, Red Hat became the first $1 billion open-source company. And the NYSE runs Linux.

The London Stock Exchange tried Windows Server (big FAIL, switch of CEOs after that) and then they brought in Linux. To me, it’s ridiculous that ATMs would run on Windows. Even if ATMs are far more controlled environments than PCs, the operating system simply isn’t built for security. Windows/Microsoft is a familiar route, not a secure one. Less-trained IT staff can run Windows Server but Linux IT staff can do much more with Linux than can be done with Windows Server, especially for the price. I think XP computers will either stay as they are or become Linux PCs. It seems unlikely anyone would pay good money to upgrade Windows on them, and the initiated are probably as inclined to install Linux for free as they are to pirate Windows 7, the latter choice less likely to come with updates.

Enterprises should already have switched computers. I’m not claiming Linux is absolutely perfect or somehow close to a static idea of perfect. I think it might be as good as reasonably possible, which in my opinion, is as close to perfection as anything ever gets.

I think Linux was designed for security and Windows is an evolution of DOS built upon DOS and all past versions of Windows. Maybe you’re right about the updates, but I suggest that embedded systems run a very limited version of Linux or Windows. I’m not sure what you mean about Microsoft “at least” fixes their junk. You’re suggesting that embedded Windows systems receive updates while Linux ones don’t? How many Blu-rays have been compromised? What difference has that made to anyone?

Are you really suggesting Android doesn’t get security updates? I don’t think Microsoft actually “fixes” their junk. I think the majority of their “fixes” are the equivalent of “trying to bail out a boat with a sieve” (to quote Eric S.

I found a Tech Republic article from Jan. 16 (“Linux: The clear choice for security”) that explains why the UK’s Communications-Electronics Security Group chose Linux.

You can also find more details of their findings on the UK government site under the “End User Devices Security and Configuration Guidance” collection. Sorry, I’m not from Europe and must have missed that. But you described one instance, which involves vandalising the ATM. So of course if you expose the computer system to advanced user input there is potential for hacking. Not to mention the criminals had “profound knowledge of the target ATMs”. And I bet the ATMs didn’t get any security updates after first being installed years ago.

Anyway, point taken, they can be hacked if you can drill the machine, and can access a USB input, and have advanced hacking and ATM knowledge. Actually, I *strongly* dislike Windows 7 & 8, and my main problem with the newer Windows versions is the very same as the one excellent reason for me to still be using XP Pro in 2014 and later (were it not EOL and thus will no longer be patched after April 2014): You can *ONLY* perform a “repair install” using XP! This is extremely important for me! Microsoft truly screwed the pooch with later versions by removing all ability to perform a repair install. Just try to launch the Windows 7+ installer when your existing Win7 system won’t boot — you absolutely CAN’T do it! But when there’s been a driver or hardware change (or some other such issue), it’s quite easy to do with XP/XP Pro.

Win7+’s incompetent developers stupidly decided/assumed that the ONLY things that could prevent Win7 from booting were fairly trivial issues that could be fixed with the boot repair options, but that’s absolutely FALSE. Many times over the years I’ve encountered technical issues that caused booting problems and fixed them easily with an XP repair install.

But with Win7 and later version of Windows, if you run into that type of problem, you’re utterly and completely stuck and you’re often forced all the way to re-install Windows -AND- re-install all of your apps (and I’ve got hundreds of them!) Screw Windows 7 & 8! I want to keep my beloved XP Pro! You are WRONG. Learn how to read! Here’s the operative sentence from my post: “Just try to launch the Windows 7+ installer when your existing Win7 system won’t boot — you can’t do it except to re-install Windows 7 from scratch!” I’ve long been fully aware of the procedure at the link you provided.

But IT WILL NOT WORK if you can’t fully boot your existing Windows 7 system! Your reading incompetence failed to comprehend Step 1: “1. Start Windows 7, and log on to an administrator account.” If you can’t do that, however, you’re screwed!

Your argument is complete nonsense; best to ignore you. Why can’t you read? Why is your reading comprehension stuck at kindergarten levels? You stupidly wrote: “Yeah you really have the latest tech, with your 2001 OS lol!”, but what did I actually write? Allow me to quote myself: “I continue to upgrade my hardware with the latest technologies” Can you say “hardware”, little Marky? When you grow up, remember to ask your Mommy to explain the difference between “hardware” and “operating system” And please see my recent replies to Heath Parsons and Mo Friedrich, and the post from Cactus311. Bwahahaaha First: If you screw your system up so much the excellent auto repair tools on the install disc can’t help you anymore, you either don’t know what you are doing on a pc, or your hardware is broken.

Second: If you regularly destroy your OS, you should definitely do a regular backup. Problem solved. Third: If you install hundreds of apps, I can tell you why your system keeps crashing. You don’t need that much and keep installing bullshit which slows down and breaks windows. For comparison, I have several systems set up with Win7, Win8, XP back then aswell. They run smoothly for years without needing a fresh install or system repairs. All I do is install updates and install only tools I really and regularly need.

I’m sorry, but you should really learn how to use a computer. Your insults and mockery should be directed at yourself!

Those so-called “excellent auto repair tools” are ONLY good for trivial boot problems, and will NOT solve ANY truly significant issues! Jusrt one of the fairly common issues that those babyish “auto repair tools” CANNOT solve is when you’ve made a significant change to your hardware configuration (or in the case that you’re moving your bootable system partition to a new computer). Then the ONLY thing that can save you from having to re-install Windows is an XP Pro repair install! Second: A backup changes NOTHING, fool! My backups are exact copies of the system partition that won’t boot!! What good are they, simpleton! Third: Are you really so stupid as to imagine that I try to run all 100+ apps SIMULTANEOUSLY?

What a moron! Only a cretinous yahoo like yourself would imagine that simply installing multiple apps somehow confuses Windows or causes technical problems in and of itself! I’m sorry, but you should really learn to know what you’re blathering about before making a fool of yourself in public! Dude, calm down. Please tell me of any hardware changes which you do regularly that require a reboot? Changing from an IDE disk to a SATA one?

Okay, the system could require AHCI drivers, not the easiest thing, but I am sure even Google can tell you to boot a live system and inject the files. Moving the system partition to a new pc is no problem at all, as while booting up on the new hardware, Windows 7 checks for it and installs drivers conveniently in the background.

You won’t ever get in difficulties unless you use some obscure legacy hardware. By the way: There is no licensing problem either, you can of course reactivate your purchased key. If you backup regularly, that means a full backup once a week and a differential backup daily, you could go back to yesterday if needed, which of course will boot if you do exact copies.

This solution requires about the same storage as your system partition if you swap the backup files weekly and is easily scriptable. And keep your insults to yourself, please. No, I never assumed you run 100+ apps simultaneously. I stated you install way too many programs you don’t actually need. But installing dozens of applications not only installs framework applications, update scheduler services and background tasks, but provides Windows with shared libraries and various files which slow the system down extremely after some time. Please stop those childish theories, I know what I’m talking about – but feel free to research and correct me while citing sources.

Thank you for your invitation to show, once again, what a naive fool you are! Like the others who have attacked me without understanding, you’ve fallen victim to psychological projection of sorts, in which you unjustly assume that simply because I have a different view, I must be an idiot – or at least that I know less than you. You are a fool! I own multiple Intel-based desktops, most of which run XP Pro (I have other machines and OSes as well, including micoboxes I use for embedded realtime software development).

I am also a hobbyist who does a lot of playing around with various pieces of hardware for fun and for education and experimentation. XP Pro is the ONLY Windows OS that allows me to do all that (via pre-boot repair install) without having to constantly re-install Windows 7 and my apps from scratch over and over again. Only a foolish newbie could so stupidly fail to understand these basic facts! Also, I am not independently wealthy, and so I can’t afford to upgrade every one of those 11 computers with the latest hardware technology simultaneously. So when I update one from, for example, SATA-II to, say, SSD, (or new SAS standards or UltraSCSI or whatever), you CANNOT boot into Win 7 or 8 in order to even TRY to do a repair install! ONLY XP allows such hardware boot-device updates via a repair install at boot time!

How can you live with such a tiny brain? As for your infantile non-stop nonsense about backups (as if I’d never heard of it or done it!), of course I make backups — and full ones at that, and often more than one a day!

Like countless others, I have scripted (using AutoIt) DriveImage XML, using MS VSS to create full image backups even while I’m working! How DARE you assume I’m an idiot, when you’re far stupider than myself! As for your other infinite loop of crackpottery concerning “too many apps”, you still assume I’m so stupid as to mindlessly install absolutely ANYTHING without understanding what I’m doing! I eschew almost ALL freeware apps (I’m not even very comfortable with DriveImage XML, which is pretty crude), and as a software developer myself, I’m well aware of unnecessary libraries, dlls, services, software conflicts, and all the rest. And who the hell are you to dictate the max number of apps anyone should install — do you fancy yourself some software deity?

You merely ASSUMED I was some stupid newbie, again as a result of ignorant projection! To again throw your juvenile blathering back at you: Please stop those childish theories, I know what I’m talking about – but feel free to research and correct me while citing sources. Man, you sound like a 14 year old child. Windows 7 developers are extremely talented; their direction may be off because of Ballmer, but they are writing and collaborating on millions of lines of code. Let’s see you write an operating system eh?

Regular Backups. It’s apparent that you don’t do them. Stop installing malware with those “hundreds” of programs. Probably shouldn’t opt in to those toolbars and search tools either.

Install CCleaner. You can use 1 more app. Computers are like cars.

Do regular maintenance like defrag (esp. On XP), Windows updates, drive scanning. There shouldn’t be a reason for reinstalling XP every 6 months if you do things carefully. I’ve owned 10 systems, Windows 95, 98, XP Home & Pro, Vista Home Premium & Business, and Windows 7 and I play around on Debian and Ubuntu Linux boxes. I’ve also maintained Windows and Exchange servers, and none of those have ever gone down to the point of reinstalling.

I’ve only had to reinstall Windows twice, and that was more than 10 years ago, and was because I got a virus from all the torrenting of illegal programs and music from KaZaA. It wouldn’t hurt for you to test programs in a virtual machine. Stop using so many exclamation marks, it kills your credibility. And name-calling doesn’t help your situation. You write: “Every now and then I might have to reinstall, say if I have a new SSD I like to do a clean install”.

You say you “like” to do a clean install in that instance, but the truth is that if you try to update or change the hardware/adapter you boot from and you use anything later than XP, you are FORCED to perform a full install of Win 7/8 and ALL your apps! That’s exactly the same point I have been trying to get through your skulls from my very first post! I repeat: That’s exactly the same point I have been trying to get through your skulls from my very first post! If I may address Mark and Mo as well as yourself, Heath? It seems to me that in the insults and abuse department, none can claim innocence. On technical grounds, anyway, Spection hath the right of it.

XP (at least the Pro version) provided the knowledgeable user an exceptional degree of freedom and flexibility to even drastically change the underlying hardware configuration without having to fully reinstall Windows and all the user’s applications (although a phone call to MS to re-activate XP would often be required). The level of freedom provided was sometimes difficult to match even in many Linux distributions. XP was truly an exemplar of such freedom.

That poster was also correct that all later versions of Windows lack anything remotely close to that freedom, since their users can no longer employ the repair install procedure whenever a significant hardware change is made (which usually prohibits booting). This was clearly a deliberate decision on Microsoft’s part.

They viewed the exceptional degree of liberty that Cutler, et. (IMO easily the greatest software designer/developer whose work I am aware of) had designed into NT and was carried over into XP, as a financial threat to their personal fortunes. This is precisely because, as he/she pointed out, the potential existed such that one could quite easily copy over an XP installation to a completely different computer with radically different hardware configuration and, after running a repair installation, run two different computers with the same OS and license key (assuming the individual were unconcerned about the illegality of doing so). A strong argument can be made that this devolution of Windows capabilities is also a consequence of deficient software design, in that the developers were insufficiently imaginative and skilled to create a secure licensing system that retained XP’s impressive capacity to allow extensive hardware reconfiguration.

I took advantage of this ability many times because, as a small commercial developer of custom Windows software, I didn’t have to have the many different computers I would have required to test my software on multiple hardware configurations, as any competent developer must otherwise purchase or rent. With the demise of XP, a truly impressive Windows capability will be lost forever, due entirely to greed and deficient design skills.

I, for one, will sorely miss it. Man, you sound like a 7 year old inbred hillbilly! You write: “Let’s see you write an operating system eh?” I’ve written 4 of them (well, maybe 3.9 since I took some code from one to use in another). They’re all embedded custom RTOS systems, for customers such as NASA and General Atomics and some defense contractors. And even though two of them ran on the same hardware architecture (1750A), the rest of the hardware/device architecture was so radically different I could use almost nothing from the other OS. Systems such as VRTX make things much easier nowadays (especially with today’s far more powerful chips & chipsets), but when you have to squeeze every bit of performance out of limited CPU capabilities, a custom RTOS was often mandatory. They’re also needed at times because of custom ASICs and the like.

How many operating systems have *YOU* developed, and how many of them did you develop from scratch? You don’t impress me with your little “maintenance” skills, scriptkiddie! Now for the rest of your babyish crap: (1) Concerning backups and (2) your odoriferous “too many apps” flatulence, see my reply to that cretin Mo Friedrich, above. (3): CCleaner is barely acceptable (but only with CCEnhancer), but I use far better tools than that, and I also developed my own custom tools. As for (4): I see you, too, just like the laughably dull-witted Mo Friedrich and VirtualMark, suffer from terrible reading comprehension!

You coprolite-for-brains cretinous yahoos stupidly missed my repeated explanations — right from the start! — that this has NOTHING to do with lack of backups or laziness or data corruption or the like, but from DELIBERATELY CHANGING MY *HARDWARE* CONFIGURATIONS! Sometimes it’s because I’ve bought NEW *hardware* to update one of my machines to the latest technology, and other times it’s because I’m experimenting with different *hardware* for educational or experimental purposes. WHY CAN’T YOU PEOPLE READ??

Look again at the last sentence of the second paragraph of my OP, or re-read this part of a later post: “I continue to upgrade my hardware with the latest technologies, which is EXACTLY why I need the boot-time repair install abilities that ONLY XP Pro has!” Finally, without the slightest hint of irony or self-reflection, you dare to insult me for insulting you when YOU opened your reply to me with the words: “Man, you sound like a 14 year old child”! Kettle needs to examine the mote in it’s own eye before insulting pot. Grease Musical Libretto Pdf.

I held on to XP until my system(s) both died last October & have been using 7 since. Given a preference, I’d still use XP, better yet 98 which are friendlier and give more control (JMNSHO) to the user – I so resent how their OS presumes to make my configuration decisions for me and difficult to change. So many of macroCrap’s products truly suck from the day of the release to day of EOL it boggles the imagination. Absent the monopoly crafted by Gates, more dependable apps, *not* tightly tied to / bundled with the WinBlows OS would lead their fields thinking particularly of Word Perfect, Firefox & dBase. But to be compatible to the mutton market (low information sheep) which Gates exploited, we have to use the latest iteration of bloated crapware coming out of his shop. Truly he has fully realized the prosperity of underestimating consumer intelligence.

I just cannot understand WHY so many are content with being threatened by MS. Windows XP will indeed CONTINUE to work day after day, after month, after year and regardless of no more updates and security fixes.

Any, any, ANY knowledgeable guru will tell you the same thing. Just keep your nose out of porn forests, and other nefarious URLS, make a pristine smooth-running image just in case your teenage nephew conned you into letting him use your computer. My home laptops and PCs will literally fall apart before my XP will fail.

Mine ain’t broke, so no need to “fix” it. To virtualmark who is dominating this blog.

Seems to me you have never tried alternative browsers than run thru secure servers. If you had you would know XP is not dead and not an insecure operating system to use. To the contrary, XP is the new challenge for developers to keep alive and running.and there are hundreds, maybe thousand of them doing that right now, and more than enough secure servers to run it thru.

Your first and most infamous post: “There’s really no good reason for anyone to be using XP in 2014. It was great in 2001, but it’s had it’s day” is a joke, right? You were just joking, right? A bad joke for sure.

As reported by Wayne Williams at Betanews and confirmed by us, tricks Windows Update into providing updates for it. UPDATE: Six months later, find out. Williams says that the hack, included just below, makes the system look like.

To apply the hack, create a text file with a.reg extension and the contents below: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM WPA PosReady] 'Installed'=dword:00000001 Run it by double-clicking in Windows Explorer. After this is done, if you run Windows Update, it will find several updates, as illustrated in this screen capture: Image: ZDNet/CBS Interactive The screen capture is from our own tests, which appear to work. Notice that two of the displayed updates are for WEPOS (Windows Embedded Point of Service) and. The others are for Windows Server 2003, which runs the same kernel and many other components as Windows XP.

This specific hack works only on 32-bit systems, but a 64-bit workaround is available at, which may have been Williams's source for the 32-bit hack. [UPDATE:] Late Monday we received a statement from a Microsoft spokesperson: We recently became aware of a hack that purportedly aims to provide security updates to Windows XP customers. The security updates that could be installed are intended for Windows Embedded and Windows Server 2003 customers and do not fully protect Windows XP customers. Windows XP customers also run a significant risk of functionality issues with their machines if they install these updates, as they are not tested against Windows XP. The best way for Windows XP customers to protect their systems is to upgrade to a more modern operating system, like Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. Related Topics.
