Melville Clark (qv) had some association with Story & Camp, probably as factory superintendant, as his patented tilt-top case design was shown in their 1882 catalog. Apparently Clark bought out Camp about 1883 when Story & Clark (qv) was formed. Serial numbers: 1883 - 7611, 1883 - 8551. STORY & CLARK ORGAN CO. Corner Canal & 16th St., Chicago, IL; after 1901 located in Grand Haven, MI; established in 1884 by Hampton L. Story and Melville Clark.

Story was previously a partner in Powers & Story, H.L. (1869) and in Story & Camp (qv), manufacturer, music dealer and agent for Estey. Story & Camp was dissolved in 1884 when H.L.

Story retired to California. His retirement was shortlived, however, as he soon formed the Coronado Beach Company in association with Elisha Babcock, Jr. To develop the Coronado peninsula near San Diego.

The showpiece of this development was the Hotel del Coronado, still in operation as a luxury resort hotel. At the time of his retirement in 1884 Story organized the Story & Clark Organ Co. With Melville Clark (qv), a reed organ builder, along with his son, Edward H. The firm was incorporated in 1888 with E.H. Story as president and Melville Clark as vicepresident. The Story & Clark catalog for 1885 credits Melville Clark with building the first organ factory in Chicago.

Story & Clark organs are noted for their metal stop knobs, used from about 1885 until about 1890, and after 1890 for the beautiful pink porcelain stop knobs. In 1896 a new firm of Story & Clark and F. Kaim & Sohn Piano & Organ Co. Was formed in England, located at 62-65 Tabernacle Street, London.

Organ production ceased about 1897-1899. Clark left in 1900 to start the Melville Clark Co., and the business, trade marks and patents were sold to the Ann Arbor Organ Co. See Clark & Rich.
