A short and simple demonstration of the Optoelectronics Scout, one of my favorite pieces of test equipment. Of course it is more than just test equipment, as it has many uses in the field. One of the most versatile Frequency Counters around (also called a Frequency Recorder), it can also store captured frequencies in one of its 400 memories for later download to a PC or manual perusing. If you are serious about the VHF/UHF monitoring hobby, it is a must have for your kit.

I am not affiliated with the manufacturer, I simply enjoy using this unit. It does have its limitations however, and is seriously affected by signals which dominate over those weaker stations that you may be looking for. I use a variety of notch filters in the field, and a good tunable preselector is said to work wonders. Another useful function of the Scout is that it can 'Reaction Tune' a receiver such as the IC-R10/20 via CI-V, creating a portable signal intercept receiver.
