That page also includes a list of Haitian “City names” for males– “The most popular names among educated young Haitian men born in 1981 to 1993” – and a list. [16] The samples are reinforced by textual allusions to such music, quoted by Chuck D in his lyrics, including 'sound of the funky drummer' (James Brown and.

TV21, Cabaret Voltaire, Edinburgh, July 9. As has been well documented, were one of the post-punk bands out of Scotland in the early 1980s. They were part of a scottish post-punk scene that also included the Scars and the Prats, and most famously, Simple Minds. They formed in 1979 in Ayrshire and split in 1982, the day after they supported the Rolling Stones in Edinburgh at the Playhouse, leaving behind some brilliant singles, and an album, The Thin Red Line, now available as part of the compilation Snakes and Ladders. They reformed in October 2005 for a gig commemorating the legendary John Peel, and things have gone from there. The line-up remains the same, with the exception of drummer Simon McGlynn who joined for the 2005 gig.

I knew the name, of course, but clikced with TV21 more when they released their first album in 28 years (and their second album ever), Forever 22 last year. What is clear, as Cabaret Voltaire fills up nicely thank you, is that while there are people who have followed them since the early days, there are also people (younger than my 33 years in some cases) who have cottoned onto them. Despite the non-appearance of one of the scheduled support bands, TV21 tear into an extended set. And it’s clear that they are enjoying themslves. The set comprises material from both albums, and the crowd are into it, though being Edinburgh, of course, we don’t quite let ourselves go as a crowd. Songs from the earlier era like ‘On the Run (Whose Gonna Get Me First? Elenco Cap Comune Italiani Pdf Writer more. )’ and ‘Snakes and Ladders’ mix well with material from last year, not least the title track of ‘Forever 22.’ If you haven’t heard this song yet, think a more positive, if more wistful take on the subject matter of the ‘Boys of Summer.’ There’s been a big post-punk revival in recent years, which has had a major impact on the ‘indie scene’ (such as it is) over the last five years.

What’s also clear is a case of plus ca change la meme chose with the despair at a Tory government of ‘What’s Going On?’ just as pertinent now as it was nearly three decades ago. But it’s worth noting that this is a band firing on all cylinders, and singer Norman Rodger with trusty foils Ally Palmer on guitar and Neil Baldwin on bass can work a crowd. I didn’t see them in 1979-1982 -and it really doesn’t matter. I’ve seen them in 2010 (twice -they played this venue two months ago as part of Tigerfest), and that’s something great to have witnessed. They finish with the cool-asrockabilly of ‘When Cole Was King’ (sic) and the sense is that here is a band who came back and still matter.

Not least is the significance that they can finish with a new song rather than just trottin out the numbers of old. Catch them when you can.

Snakes and Ladders: Almost Complete 1980-1982 is out now on Rev-Ola and Forever 22 is out on Powbeat. Do yourself a favour and buy them both. TV21 -‘On the Run.’ mp3 Posted in . Southend-based four piece Redtrack have just released their new single ‘Perfectly Fine Intellectual’/’Imogen.’ Released on Label Fandango (who also brought us early releases from the likes of Broken Records and Cut Off Your Hands, amongst others), this storming track evokes the passion of Maximo Park, the sheer energy of the Futureheads and the excitement of Arctic Monkeys.

Yet, there’s enough wonder here to make sure that the lads are not just another indie-by-numbers type of band. And it’s an excellent follow-up to last year’s ‘Poledancer.’ The band are Billy Wright (lead vocals, guitar), Phil Blake (bass), Mitch Silvey (guitar) and Andrew Perry (drums). They will release the first album ever on Label Fandango entitled Whole Town’s Heart on August 9. Check these out -and remember to let me know what you think! We are extremely excited that the, who released their debut single ‘Ruins’ this week on 17 Seconds Records (17SEC19) will be supporting Withered Hand at the Electric Circus in Edinburgh on August 17.

S debut album Good News was one of THE releases of last year; I interviewed Dan Willson in January and he’s a fantastic bloke. Interestingly, both bands have worked with Neil Pennycook of, whose profile continues to rise with slots at Glastonbury and T in the Park. If you haven’t got Meursault’s albums, you are letting yourself down, badly. In other news, I’ve been offered my own radio show on Fresh Air radio, the local student radio station in Edinburgh. Very excited toowatch this space Posted in,,, . Kid Canaveral -‘Shouting At Wildlife.’ (Straight To Video).and here it finally comes! Three years after their debut single ‘Smash Hits’ single arrived, and following a host of excellent singles (including the recent ‘You Only Went Out To get Drunk Last Night’, surely a contender for single of the year)., it was clear that this has taken its’ time, but that the end result is one that they’re pleased with, and justifiably so.

And it’s not called Shooting At Wildlife as I misheard, initially (they’re vegans, apparently). At the start of the year, album opener ‘Good Morning’ started doing the rounds and kept my appetite fully whetted until the review copy dropped into my inbox. It sets the tone for the album. Here are a band with an excellent way with a tune that invades your head and stays, very pleasantly indeed. Kid Canaveral have understood that what makes an album are great songs that all stand on their own merits, that are individual and flow together.

Here we have tweve distinct songs that showcase the band’s distinctive way with a tune. How many times over the last week I have found myself humming several of the tunes as I go about my daily work. What they also have shown that many bands would do to remember is that freshness is important, and that there is a difference between being anemic sounding stadium fodder and truly great indie-guitar-pop. It’s been more than worth the wait, I’m already onto my third listening of the album today and that’s not uncommon. And regardless of how long the second album takes, I’m sure it will be worth the wait. ****1/2 Shouting at Wildlife is released this Monday on Straight To Video. The launch night takes place tonight at Edinburgh’s Roxy Art House.

This will feature live performances from Kid Canaveral, Come On Gang! And The Scottish Enlightenment with DJ sets from Cancel The Astronauts and Award Winning Blogger, Peenko. Kid Canaveral -‘Good Morning.’ mp3 Posted in . It’s been a quiet few days around this blog, which is not to say it’s been quiet round these parts. On the contraryI’ve been DJing the last two nights on the trot.

Thursday night saw me DJing inbetween the bands at the Last Battle single launch at Edinburgh’s Wee Red Bar. An entirely scottish indie set which saw me play the likes of the Pastels, Peter Parker and Jesus H. Foxx, along with the Dirty Cuts and Aberfeldy. The night was not all about me (yes, ha ha) but saw sets from, a solo set by Neil Pennycook of (fresh from Glastonbury!!!!) and the themselves. And Neil and Bart from helped out on the Last Battle’s set. So a great gig all round.

Great sets all, the wee red was hotter than a sauna and absolutely packed. Added to which, the single has been played by Jim Gellatly (and featured in his podcast), Vic Galloway (and featured in his podcast) and also featured in the recent Song By Toad podcast. It will be available on iTunes etc. The Skinny have given it 4/5 which is the first decent review they have given anything on the label. And yesterday I DJed at my friend Louisa’s birthday party, this time with a set featuring the likes of Madonna, The Killers and Outkast.

Hadn’t DJed at Cabaret Voltaire for over a year, good fun to be back there! Anyway, these two tracks are so gorgeous I have had them on repeat this morning. Enjoy Posted in . First of all, do not confuse them with a band with a very similar name. Secondly – no that is not Alex Kapranos in the video, it’s Rik from Squarelips who did the video. But it is definitely Glasgow in the video. Are an extremely excellent band from Glasgow.

They are about to release their second album Do No Harm in September. In the meantime, the single ‘Papercuts’ -the video for which is below, can be bought from their Bandcamp page. You can download their debut album for free (yes, you did read that right) from their. A quirky pop delight -pop is not a bad thing! Yup, you did read that right., the seminal scottish band, much beloved by you know who, and indeed anyone with half an ear for great music are back. The core duo of Frances McKee and Eugene Kelly will be releasing their long-awaited second album Sex With An X on -who else?! – Sub Pop on September 13 (September 14 if you live in the US or Canada, hey you can’t have everything).

The tracklisting is as follows: Ruined Sex With An X The Devil Inside Me Such a Fool Turning It On Overweight But Over You Poison Pen I Hate the 80’s Mouth to Mouth Whitechapel My God’s Bigger Than Your God Exit The Vaselines Not only that but the Vaselines are touring!; they include Edinburgh and Glasgow and two dates in Mexico. And you can download the track ‘I Hate The 80s’ here. Still in his teens, Olly Sabin AKA has proved that, actually, playing around on computer games can most definitely get you somewhere. Having released a couple of singles on Scottish label Euphonios, ‘Lion Hat’ and ‘Wee Monsters’, young Master Sabin has done several BBC sessions and is now signed to Ministry of Sound. (And he’s been supported by X-Lion Tamer, lucky lad).

He’s also done remixes for the Pet Shop Boys and Gorillaz, amongst others. His first release for the Ministry of Sound label is this fantastic dubstep track ‘Dreamcatcher.’ Very, very good indeed, and proof that it’s not just pale kids with guitars north of Hadrian’s Wall, y’know by.and if you liked that, go to download ‘Lion Hat’ for free! Please note: I receive a lot of emails every day encouraging me to check out new bands, but it does take a while to get through them all. Please do not send follow-up emails, it makes an already difficult job impossible. I'm based in Scotland so the likelihood of me coming to your showcase in New York (unless you are going to provide travel, board and lodging is slim). The best way is by this blog's own email address.Did I mention about not sending follow-up emails? Some music I love – and think you should check out too.
